Is your homemade dog food balanced?

The free check runs each ingredient through USDA FoodData Central and compares the whole recipe with the AAFCO adult maintenance profile, per 1,000 kcal. These are the same profiles pet food makers use for “complete and balanced” claims.

Short
Below the AAFCO minimum. The recipe needs more of this nutrient.
Over
Above an AAFCO maximum, such as vitamin A, vitamin D or calcium. Too much harms, too.
OK
Between the minimum and any maximum.

When a free tool is enough

If you cook for a healthy adult dog and are happy to pick from a fixed ingredient list, the free Balance IT recipe builder, run by a veterinary nutritionist, may be all you need. It can balance with its own supplement blend or with human supplements.

FidoFormula is built for what fixed-list tools leave out:

  • Raw feeding

BARF and PMR proportions, organ shares and the calcium a boneless raw diet needs.

  • Your own ingredients

Venison, goat, green tripe, sardines: anything in our USDA list or on a nutrition label.

  • Supplements you already own

Pick a product type or type in its label. We work out the dose.

  • Change without starting over

Switch proteins or add a dog and re-balance in seconds.

Balance IT is a trademark of its owner. FidoFormula is not affiliated with it.

Built on public data, with limits we tell you about

What it’s built on

USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) for ingredient nutrients.

AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance: minimums and maximums per 1,000 kcal.

USDA, FDA and NIH iodine data, because standard ingredient data has no iodine. Chloride is estimated from sodium.

Calories: RER = 70 × weight in kg to the 0.75 power, times an activity factor you can adjust.

How we calculate

Who it’s for

Healthy adult dogs, 1 year and older.

Not pregnant or nursing.

Not for puppies, or for dogs with kidney, liver, heart, pancreas or gut disease, or on a prescribed diet. Ask your vet or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Check it with your vet

A calculator can’t examine your dog. Take the PDF to your vet before you switch, change food over about a week, and weigh your dog every 2–4 weeks.

Feeding raw? The AVMA and FDA warn that raw meat can carry Salmonella and Listeria. Handle it like raw meat for your family.

Feeding a cat?

Cats need taurine, and standard ingredient data doesn’t list it. We won’t guess. Leave your email and we’ll tell you when the cat version is ready.

Questions owners ask

  • No. FidoFormula is a calculator that follows the AAFCO adult maintenance profile. It doesn't replace your vet. The PDF lists every ingredient, dose and AAFCO value so your vet can review the plan.
